A brief history of Wit Deep Primary School
On the 22 January 1907, Wit Deep Primary was opened by John Montgomery, a certified teacher from Scotland. There were 4 teachers, and 60 pupils enrolled, who were the children of miners from the Wit Deep Mine. The original school was located where Balmoral College is today. The school was moved over to the current building in 1986, which is in Witfield a suburb of Boksburg on the East Rand of Johannesburg.
The cornerstone of the original Wit Deep Primary was built into the new building, which is inhabited today, and can be seen in the hall foyer.
This year the school turned 115 years old, we have a current enrollment of 703 learners and 50 staff members. We have come a long way!
The original school logbooks from 1907 are still in possession of the school and make for interesting reading. The logbooks chronicle the school’s history encapsulating entertaining stories of marauding donkeys on the school grounds to describing the experiences of the school’s survival through two World Wars.
